This catalog offers the first scholarly treatment and classification of almost 320 of these Dutch firearms of the 17th and 18th centuries in the collectinos of the Moscow Kremlin Armoury, the Moscow Historical Museum, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Gatchina Palace Museum near St. Petersburg.
That Dutch firearms in particualar are so well represtened in Russian collections illustrates the strong political and economic relations between Russia and the Dutch Republic in this period. They were collected from different sources, mainly as a result of the large-scale trade in military firearms between the Dutch Republic and the Tsars of Russia and from ambassadorial and merchants' gifts.
